Mayor launches new London Drug & Alcohol NetworkLondon Mayor Ken Livingstone launched the London Drug & Alcohol Network on 12th July 2001, at the Royal Commonwealth Club, Northumberland Avenue, London WC2.
The London Drug & Alcohol Network is a new London-wide organisation, set up to give advice, information and support to frontline services - those working directly with people who have drug and alcohol problems in London. It is the first time organisations providing drug and alcohol services have come together as one network to tackle the Capital's drug and alcohol problems on a pan-London basis. As the only organisation that represents the interests of London drug and alcohol service providers, the London Drug and Alcohol Network is uniquely placed to influence policy and practice on drugs and alcohol across London.
Outlining his plans to tackle the complex issue of drugs and alcohol in London to an audience of 200 people including directors of London drug and alcohol services, Drug Action Team co-ordinators and others, Ken Livingstone stated that he welcomes the London Drug & Alcohol Network as a partner in the drive to reduce the harm they cause. He added: "I want London to be a safe, healthy, fair and thriving World City. We can only achieve this if we take seriously the problems that alcohol and drugs cause to London and Londoners. We need to work with our partners and adopt an approach that meets London's unique needs. We want the best help and support for alcohol and drug users, their families and friends. We want to channel our resources to protect communities from the violence and crime associated with alcohol and drugs. Working together, we can make a real impact to reduce
the harm of alcohol and drugs for Londoners."
Anne Delargy, Director of the London Drug & Alcohol Network, commented: "I am delighted that the Mayor has shown how crucial he thinks this issue is. The London Drug & Alcohol Network will bring together the wealth of expertise and experience of its member agencies in tackling drug and alcohol problems in London. Working in partnership across London's diverse communities, we can help build a healthier future for all Londoners."
